Description

ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) is a non-metallic fiber optic cable designed for aerial installations. Requiring no separate support or messenger wire, it uses robust materials like aramid yarns (Kevlar) to support its own weight across long spans. It is highly prized for electrical grid communications and rugged telecom deployments.

Cable Construction
ADSS cables are built entirely from dielectric (non-conductive) materials like glass, plastic, and aramid fibers. A typical cable includes:
  • Optical Fibers: Core data transmission channels, usually single-mode for long distances.
  • Central Strength Member: Often a Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) rod to provide structural stability.
  • Aramid/Kevlar Yarn: Provides high tensile strength, preventing the cable from snapping under wind, ice, or its own weight.
  • Inner & Outer Jackets: Polyethylene (PE) or Track-Resistant (AT) sheaths that protect against moisture, UV radiation, and environmental wear.
Technical Advantages
  • Completely Non-Metallic: Because it contains zero metal, it cannot induce electrical currents, making it perfectly safe to install directly on or near high-voltage live power lines.
  • Self-Supporting: Eliminates the need for a separate steel messenger wire. It can span distances from 100 meters up to 1,500 meters between poles or towers.
  • Lightweight & Compact: Reduces the physical load and strain on existing utility poles and tower structures.
  • Cost-Effective: Drastically reduces installation costs by avoiding underground trenching and leveraging existing electrical poles.

Applications
  • Power Grid Communications: Widely used by electrical utilities to build "smart grids," allowing companies to connect remote substations, monitor line statuses, and enable real-time dispatch automation.
  • Rural & Remote Telecom: A premier solution for delivering Fiber to the Home (FTTH) in rural or mountainous areas where underground trenching is too expensive or impractical.
  • Urban Aerial Backbones: Cities and ISPs utilize ADSS to string high-speed network backbones across utility poles without disrupting street traffic or tearing up roads.
  • Cross-Obstacle Deployment: Its high tensile strength allows it to safely span wide physical barriers like rivers, deep valleys, and highways.
